Contrary to its name, Howsham Mill is not actually located in the village of Howsham! It stands on an island in the middle of the River Derwent across the ancient water meadow from Howsham Village. To get there, you should park at Howsham Bridge (the stone road bridge opposite the gates to Howsham Hall) and then walk under the bridge, along the public footpath which runs next to the river. There is a small car park for visitors to Howsham Mill which is open most weekends, and for pre-arranged visits during the week. (To arrange a group visit, please contact Mo MacLeod on 01653 619748 or email mo@rht.greenisp.org). From York
From Scarborough
Please note: It is about a quarter of a mile from the car park to the mill, and there is no vehicular access to the island itself. Please make sure you have non-precious footwear with you, particularly if it has been raining as the footpath can get very muddy! The site is open to the public all the time - please feel free to visit and enjoy the magic of the island - but be aware that it is a work in progress complete with potentially unsafe structures, uneven ground and fast-flowing water! Children should be supervised at all times. |
