Renewable Energy

Home

Climate change caused by global warming is now an accepted reality, and we all need to make an effort to reduce emissions of 'greenhouse gases' to minimise the impact they are having on our world. A large amount of these emissions come from the fossil fuels that are burnt to produce our electricity, so finding alternative sources of power is one of the solutions that should be adopted.

Hydropower

The idea of power from water has been around for centuries,   and literally thousands of old mill sites used to generate their own mechanical power. Modern factories powered by electricity now operate more efficient machinery, but the water could still be used to generate the power required.

There are thousands of old water mill sites in the UK, with many still retaining their now redundant buildings. The Renewable Heritage Trust plans to breathe new life into these building by finding a 21st century use for the power of water, whilst preserving the heritage of the site.

Solar Power

The energy from the sun can also be put to work. Photovoltaic (PV) cells can turn sunlight into electricity, and solar panels can heat water.

The Renewable Heritage Trust plans to use the latest materials to install these devices invisibly on historic buildings, and thus demonstrate what is possible today. For example PV cells can now be supplied to look like conventional slates, and used directly as a roofing material. Alternatively, they can be incorporated directly into glass panels that form part of the roof to provide both shading and power.

Wind Power

There is currently much controversy over the visual intrusion of wind turbines, but it is possible to adopt a more sensitive approach. For example small wind turbines are available which simply fit onto the roof of the building and look like an old fashioned weather vane.

The Renewable Heritage Trust plans to install this kind of wind turbine on buildings where it would look appropriate.

Other renewable energy sources

There are various other types of renewable energy source such as wave, tidal, biomass, and geothermal which may be appropriate for future projects.
